FRANKFORT, Ky. – Arts leaders from across the commonwealth came to Frankfort today to celebrate the value of the arts and meet with their legislators. During this time, Senator Ed Worley, Representative Lonnie Napier, Don Pasley and Representative Harry Moberly presented a check to Board Secretary, Tanya Stewart, and Executive Director, Gwen Childs, of Berea Arts Council for its FY2008 General Operating Support Grant. In July of 2007, the Berea Arts Council Inc was awarded $4,933 by the Kentucky Arts Council, funded through federal and state resources.

"The Berea Arts Council plays a vital role in the arts community of Berea. The Arts Council provides excellent opportunities for the citizens of Madison County and beyond to participate in the arts through their offerings of exhibits, workshops, performances, and hands-on art activities for children. Their summer Quilt Extravaganza celebrates the rich tradition of quilting in our region and brings visitors to the community,” said Senator Worley.

“The Berea Arts Council continues to be a leader in the arts community in Berea. Its public arts projects such as the Show of Hands in 2003 and the Flying Quilts in the summer of 2007 bring vitality to the community and enrich the awareness and enjoyment of art for all the region’s citizens,” said Representative Napier.

General Operating Support grants from the Kentucky Arts Council provide operational funding assistance on a competitive basis to arts and cultural organizations and community arts programs to ensure that year-round participation in the arts is available to people across Kentucky.

The Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet, creates opportunities for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Funding for the Kentucky Arts Council is provided by the Kentucky State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
